Life’s 8 Big Questions

The greatest spiritual teachers and prophets have taught us the power of our own thought.

“What you think about you bring about.”

“Thoughts become things.”

“It is done unto you AS you believe.”

We are the creators of our own universe.  AND collectively we are the creators of the Universe that we all live in.

With that said, shouldn’t we take time on a regular basis to examine our own thoughts, beliefs and actions?

Today I’m pondering these 8 questions. Would you contemplate them with me?

  1. Can we condemn the people responsible for terror attacks and say they have NO reverence for Life, WHILE at the same time, shoot a bear or deer just to hang its head on our living room wall?
  2. Can we say that human life is more precious than animal life, WHILE at the same time put a human in jail for killing a dog?
  3. Can we teach our children that it’s wrong to fight someone just because they disagree with them, WHILE at the same time wage war on another country because they disagree with our policies?
  4. Can we be animal rights activists and strive to keep the animals of our planet safe, WHILE at the same time cook up a juicy chicken for dinner?
  5. Can we praise God at church and declare that “I and the Father are ONE”, WHILE at the same time run our political campaigns based on slander and degradation?
  6. Can we say that we are “pro-life”, WHILE at the same time look upon the starving children of our world with apathy?
  7. Can we say that gun violence is horrible and mourn for all of the lives lost, WHILE at the same time buy guns for ourselves and keep gun manufacturers in business with our purchases?
  8. Is it possible that all of the horror and crime that we see on the news each day is simply a REFLECTION of our collective thoughts, beliefs and actions?

Think about it.

Expect the Great! But NOT in Detail

In general I think it’s a good idea to expect great things in your life.  I know, beyond knowing the God has your best interest at heart.  That all things conspire to your greatest and most good.  That all things really do work out in the “end”.

But there is this sticking point that people (who are more type-A and controlling) like myself, get to.  We surely do expect the great. BUT we forget to leave all those little details in God’s more than capable hands.

This fact is coming more and more to my mind (and is a lesson that apparently God is still trying to teach me) now as our family is house hunting to move to a different state.

I have this picture in my head of where I want to live.  I have used all those techniques you hear about (creative imagination, visioning) to come up with this “vision”.  This is something I do naturally and have always done.  I’ve always been a daydreamer and this is how I know what I want in life.

This characteristic as been a good and helpful thing.  But now?  Now my vision of our new home, I think is keeping me from being open to finding the home that is meant for our family.

I’m so stuck in making sure the details of my vision are coming into manifestation that I am, 1. losing sight of the bigger picture of living in a happy home and 2. not trusting that God will (as He always does) work things our for the highest good of all involved.

So to help me get over my controlling nature, I called in the troops yesterday before I went out for house hunting appointments with our realtor.  I called in the troops to help me let go of MY vision and embrace GODS vision for our lives.

First, I woke up and prayed.  I didn’t pray “for” something so much as I prayed that I be open and available to hear.

We can get so caught up in what we think, and what we have learned and what we think we learned to be true, that we forget to stop, take a pause and be still and know and hear what God is guiding us to do.

I believe that God is always talking to us. Through our friends and family. Through books that we read. Through church services we attend. Through radio programs we listen to. Even through the strangers that you only meet once in your life.  The problem is that often times we are too caught up in our head to even listen to the constant “God Broadcast” of life.

So I prayed that I was open to hear. And then I would move from there.

Second, I called my girlfriend.  Nope I didn’t call her to chat it up about the latest gossip to get my mind off things.  I called her because she is my “spirit buddy”. We talk about God all the time and I knew that she would hold that prayer space for me.

And then it was time to go.

The first house we walked through felt like “home”. Even with all of its needed updates and higher price than we want to pay, it felt like home.  But as I walked through I remembered that I needed to listen first.

So I took that pause. Somewhere between the backyard and the bathroom that needed a face lift and let the Spirit of God wash over and through me.

“Its our house.”  That’s the God whisper I’m getting.

But, and here is the BIG BUT I have to let go of the need for that to be my house.

Some people call this detachment.  Its not that I don’t care about this place I want to call home, but I have to live in the space of trusting that if it is meant for us to live there it will be great!  And if it isn’t meant for us to live there it will also be GREAT!

I’ll keep you guys posted on the hunt!

Happy Easter!

So It Turns Out Blogs CAN Be Hacked Too….

It amazes me sometimes the lengths that some people will go through to get their points across or to make things plain old inconvenient for others.

It turns out, blogs (this blog to be specific) can be hacked just as easily as an email address.

So if you have been following this blog for the last month or so, you may have seen some very strange posts written in a language that I’m not even sure is a language at all.

MY APOLOGIES.

As I have been running from here and there, with kids in this activity and that and preparing to move houses (and states) I have lost touch with my beloved blogging mamas.

I do not (and have not ever to date) had guest posts so anything that comes on this website or is written on this blog is from me.  So if you shall ever see anything that seems weird or has an author other than myself, you will know the hacking continues.

I am working on a solution to this problem.  And I ask that you all bear with me in the process.

Thanks for visiting and reading.

Cooking Well and Eating Well

I have a question for all of you busy mothers today.

Many of us have obstacles that get in the way of us cooking well and eating well, especially if our kids are small and our schedules are demanding.

So the question is: What are you THREE biggest cooking and eating obstacles?

That is to say, what are the top three things that keep you from cooking as much as you would like and eating the way that you feel you (and your family)should.

My three things?

1. Lack of time. Since I’m usually spending my evenings running a child to some type of practice, cooking just gets in the way.

2. Cravings. Sure I certainly know what I “should” eat, but you know that pizza sure does sound good and of course its also easier, which solves my first obstacle.

3. Diet Differences. I’m the lone vegetarian in my house and sometimes I just don’t feel like doing double duty in the kitchen.  There are days when I know I should prepare my own separate source of protein to go along with the vegetable sides that prepared for my family, but often (too often) I just grab a bowl of cereal.  Not the most nutritious of choices.

Your turn!  What are your three biggest cooking well and eating well obstacles?

Oh and if you have suggestions for my obstacles I’m all ears!

Hear No Evil See No Evil Speak No Evil

I love the picture of those monkeys with their eyes, ears and mouths covered.  They are a physical (and entertaining) representation of the idea of seeing, hearing or speaking less “evil” into our environment.

While I’ve always liked these little figurines I’ve never fully appreciated their meaning in my life personally.

I’m just like most Westerners, I watch my night time dramas, I have eaten my fair share of cows and pigs and I have often raised my voice at my kids.

What I had failed to understand in the past is that the quality of the information we take into our being (by seeing and hearing) determines our quality of life and how we interact with those around us.

So in essence when you hear and see NO EVIL you lose the capacity to SPEAK (or act) evil as well.

But what is evil?

I don’t believe in Satan or demons so I’m not really talking about that.  I’m talking about the little pieces of negativity that we allow into our lives.

You know, the Facebook arguments that we allow ourselves to engage in.  The violent programs we watch on television. And the constantly negative news that we tune into each night.

We often times think these things don’t have an effect on us.  That because we are not acting in the harmful ways that we see and hear in the media then those things have no effect on our lives.

But don’t they?

Studies have shown that children who are exposed to violent television become “desensitized” to that particular kind of violence.  So when they do witness the death of an actual person its “no big deal”.

We know this intuitively when we consciously decided to stay away from the negative and drama filled people in our lives.  We feel like they are “bringing us down” so we try to disassociate from them when we want to live a more positive and uplifting life.

The fact is, just as the food we choose to eat determines the quality of our external physical health, so does the quality of other sensory experiences determine the quality of our emotional and spiritual well-being and actions.

So what’s a girl to do?  I gotta use Facebook to keep up with my family and distant friends – right?

I gotta watch the news sometimes to know what’s going on in the world – right?

Well here are some suggestions to help you hear no evil and see no evil, so that you can speak (and act) no evil in your life.

1. Turn off the television

You knew that was coming didn’t you?  That’s not to say not to have a TV in your house.  I personally have a few televisions in my house.  But I don’t’ feel the need to watch it all the time and to mindlessly watch ANYTHING.

I’ve become very selective about the programs I watch.  NOT because I am trying so hard to see no evil, but because I am more interested in the more positive and uplifting programs.

So for instance my favorite networks are Food Network (I love to cook and eat), Veria (which is a wellness network) and OWN (which has lots of great information on spirituality).

Maybe the travel channel or HGTV might be interesting to you.  The point is TV is a tool.  One of many that can be used to improve the quality of your life, or simply suck vital energy out of you.

2. Be around positive people

There is a reason that most religions advocate fellowship with such fervor.  There is just something about being around people who are positive and happy.  They smile more. They are happy for you and your accomplishments.  They are optimistic when you are having troubles in your life.  And they are generally on a journey of being the best them they can be.

Negative people seem to sap our energy.  They drag us down in their drama. They make us feel BAD for feeling GOOD.  And that is no place to spend your time.

3. Read or listen to inspirational messages.

Here we go back to church again.  Wonder why religious congregations meet regularly (at least once a week)?  It’s probably because we need to be constantly re-introduced to the sources of inspiration in our lives.

So maybe you have a church that you like to attend.  Go there and enjoy (and then go home and practice) the lessons taught in the sermon.

Maybe, you love to read so you buy inspirational books on topics that you like.  I’m not talking “trashy” romance novels here (although I do enjoy those too).  I’m talking more about books from authors like Stomie Omatian, Ernest Holmes, or Gary Zukav.

The point is to have an available go to source of inspiration.

4. Be grateful

I saw a documentary about kids in Kenya who were applying for a scholarship program to attend college in the United States.  What struck me at first was how incredibly POOR these kids were.  I’m not talking American poor either.  I’m talking no running water or electricity in their homes.  Cooking over a fire in a fireplace.  And milking the family cow for the morning’s milk.

But the second thing that stuck me about these kids was how HAPPY and content they were.  They had no clue how poor they were, because they had nothing to compare themselves to.  They were grateful for all that they had (and they didn’t have much)

So I bet we can be grateful.  We can sit down every day and list at least five things in our lives that we are grateful for.

I once read that the practice of gratitude was a huge determination of happiness.  I totally agree with that.

5. Be still

Sometimes we just need a minute of peace don’t we?  Just a time to be still and observe what is going on within ourselves.

When we take a break on a regular basis to “check-in” with ourselves we are better able to identify when something is not quite right.  When we are having a bad mood. When we are having a good mood.  Then we can start to track that mood to better understand what is causing it.

When we don’t take the time to be still, our emotions and internal drama fester.  Just like a disease festers in our bodies if we don’t see a doctor regularly.

So set some time aside regularly to quiet the activity of your day and be in tune with yourself.

There are lots of things you could NOT do in order to keep the negativity out of your life, like fasting from Facebook for instance.  I prefer to focus on the things that support your positive well-being.

When you focus on the positive, your life tends to move in that positive direction.

And those Evils we talked about earlier?

They may still be there, but you don’t notice them, because you have placed your attention on something else.

How do you hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil?
